When spring comes around, it’s time to take care of the lawn once more. Watering the grass is an essential aspect in keeping it luscious and green; even so, it is not as easy as switching on the hose. Here are some sprinkler system do’s and don’ts to help you get the most out of your watering routine.
Do:
Water in the Morning
It is best to water the grass in the morning, perhaps between 6 and 10 AM. The morning is the ideal time because the weather is not too hot and not too cold. Watering the lawn at night can encourage mold and fungus growth, while doing it during the day can cook the grass. The morning also tends to have less wind. If you cannot water during this time, late afternoon from 4 to 7 PM is also a good option.
Have a Rain Shutoff Device
A rain shutoff device automatically turns off the sprinkler system once it senses rain on the lawn. This is an invaluable device for homeowners, saving water and keeping the lawn from getting too moist. If there is not yet any rain, but it shows in the weather report, one can also manually shut off the system.
Inspect the Sprinkler System
Like all technology, problems can occur along the way. The best practice is to check the system once a month to ensure that nothing is amiss.
Don’t:
Overwater the Lawn
Overwatering the lawn is the last thing a homeowner wants to do. One to one-and-a-half inches of water per week over the grass is generally enough. Overwatering will also waste water, as its excess will stream down the street into the drains.
Water Outside the Lawn
Get the most out of your water usage by ensuring that only your lawn gets wet. Avoid spraying the sidewalk or driveway as much as possible. Also, keep the sprinkler from hitting a fence or tree, as this can corrode the wood, living or not.
Water Too Frequently
Lastly, it may be best to water the lawn three times a week for twenty minutes only. Water minimal times per week for a long enough time. This way, the grassroots can take a long, fulfilling draught rather than many shallow ones.
