Lawn Mowing Tips for Spring

Lawn Mowing Tips for Spring

Get a great start with your lawncare with these helpful tips!

The flowers are blooming, the bees are buzzing, and the birds are gathering nesting materials. Spring is officially here. While flowers may show the most prominent sign of growth, your lawn may be more subtle. Slowly but surely, it is turning greener and growing taller. When it comes time to mow the lawn, be sure to keep these lawn mowing tips for spring in mind.

Mow High

During the spring and summer, it is best to keep your grass taller than not. Depending on the grass species your lawn has, it could range from 1-4 inches tall. While cutting grass short during the winter prevents disease and lawn fungus, cutting it high in the summer keeps weeds from gaining as much sunlight as it might. Giving your grass the competitive edge allows it to crowd out all unwanted plants.

Mow the Lawn Often Enough

Healthy lawn practices include mowing the lawn at an appropriate rate. One way to ensure you keep up a healthy mowing schedule is to observe when your grass becomes taller than desirable. The key to cutting is never to cut off more than one-third of the total blade height. Therefore, if you want to keep your lawn one inch high, don’t let it grow much beyond that.

Leave the Clippings Behind

Another fantastic lawn mowing tip for spring is to leave those grass clippings on the lawn. There is no need to catch them along the way; our landfills already are more than full of them. Grass clippings left on the lawn are full of nutrients and water that your lawn needs to grow healthier. In fact, they can make up about 15% of your recommended lawn fertilizer application.

Keep the Blade Sharp

You might be following all of these lawn mowing tips for spring and still notice brown grass. What might cause it? Check to see that your mower’s blade is sharp. A dull blade creates a rough cut that deadens the tips instead of preserves them. A sharp blade will give a clean, healthy cut. Just remember to disconnect the spark plug before handling the blade.
