This article provides the best practices for seeding a new lawn.

Homeowners, do you want to start a new lawn? After you have completed the necessary research and selected the ideal grass species for your new lawn, it’s time to prep the soil and seed. This step gets slightly technical, and it can be disappointing to put time and money into your lawn only to discover small patches when the season approaches. This article provides the best practices for seeding a new lawn.

Determine the Soil Quality

Before seeding a new lawn, you should prioritize the first six inches into the soil. If you are certain that your home has good soil (dark, fertile, without debris), you can be sure you are ahead of the game. However, there is work to be done if you notice the dirt in your outdoor spaces is dense, rocky, and dehydrated. To increase your chances of success, please test the pH of the current soil so you can amend it appropriately with fertilizer, lime, and compost. Your soil is your excellent ally and should be treated like that. Also, you should till any excess plant material needs.

Consider the Season

Since autumn is approaching soon, cool-season grasses are popular in Maryland. So, let’s focus on seed mixes that are predominantly those species, such as bluegrass or fescues. Seeding a new lawn should take place anywhere from August to October. In addition, the seed should be divided in half, either from North to South or West to East, and sown. You should also expect to see results in about three weeks, depending on how much sunlight there is. As far as elements within our control, these species require constant maintenance as they grow.

New Lawn Maintenance

It’s important to water the lawn daily as it grows. This will promote germination and prevent the small seeds from being blown away by dust and dry dirt. You must also protect the seeds from other animals, so lay down a layer of straw to deter them. Also, start mowing your grass when it reaches 4-5 inches in height, setting your lawnmower to 3-31/2 inches. Make sure only to cut as much as the top third of your grass blades.
