Landscaping Trends for 2021

Landscaping Trends for 2021

Dress up your landscape this year with these 2021 trends.

Most people will agree that the past year saw us spend much more time at home than anyone could have predicted at the beginning of 2020. This time of forced homebodiness has awakened a new appreciation for the comforts of home that many people simply didn’t have the time to enjoy before. It also will continue to impact the trends we will see around the home for 2021, including the landscaping trends. Read on for some great ideas to consider this year.

Out Front Socializing, Backyard Privacy

Extending the useable space of your home with outdoor living areas will continue to be popular. Expect to see the front yard become the social area, including seating areas for socially distanced connecting with friends and neighbors, while the backyard turns into a private retreat. In either space, the trend will be towards comfortable and inviting spaces that make the outside an extension of the indoors as much as possible.

Playgrounds At Home

When the pandemic drove us off playgrounds, many backyards became playgrounds themselves. Large swing sets and small backyard pools sold out over the summer in many areas, prompting parents to turn to less conventional sources of fun. Expect to see this continue with a focus on unusual recreation, like backyard ninja warrior courses and zip lines.

Native Plants

Another trend that will continue to grow in popularity is planting with native plants. These are plants that grow naturally in your area and provide important food and shelter to local wildlife. They also tend to require less work and lend themselves to the popular notion of imperfect natural beauty over perfectly manicured spaces.

Useful Gardens

When you devote time and energy to a garden, you should get something out of it, and this trend can take that in two different directions. One is the trend to garden for food, meaning that you’re limiting your plantings to things you’ll eat and enjoy. The other is the idea that the act of gardening is its own reward, as a therapeutic hobby, regardless of what you’re growing.

A Room With A View

Finally, as we continue to spend time in our homes that we might otherwise have spent out and about, the views from our windows will be important. Don’t underestimate the value of a beautiful view from the rooms where you spend the majority of your time. Working from home can quickly become a drag, and it helps to have a focal point that is beautiful during every season
