If you’re thinking of renovating your old patio or wanting to give it a fresh new look, one of the first steps is to consider what material you would like to use. There are many options these days, with many colors, textures, and patterns to choose from. Here are three main types of materials used for patio pavers.
Brick Patio
Brick would make a classic material choice for your patio, in reference to historic brick buildings particularly throughout central Maryland. Brick is notably durable. It is also flexible and can shift as the ground shifts. This factor may pose some problems, though, such as an uneven surface and crooked patterns. To prevent weeds and so much shifting, gravel or sand can be used to solidify the paver. Brick also comes in various shades and colors, as well as geometric designs. A brick patio will compliment a house with its durability and uniform design.
Stone Patio
Stone, though, is more long-lasting than brick or concrete. Stone is the hardiest and the most natural choice. It comes in a variety: flagstone, fieldstone, limestone, and more. Its natural look is aesthetically pleasing to any house and has ample options. A stone patio, however, requires more maintenance. Although weeds and seeds will not grow between the cracks necessarily, seeds and debris can build up on the patio and dig down into the pores of the stone. Stone needs occasional sweeping and hosing. In addition, stone can be more uneven and harder to walk on, as opposed to the other two types.
Concrete Patio
Lastly, concrete is a third good choice to consider. Concrete is flexible in its design. It can come in many colors, patterns, and textures, like stamped concrete. Concrete pavers are more durable than poured concrete and also more flexible. If one of the slabs cracks or there needs to be some underground utility work, one can easily lift up the slab and replace it if it is cracked. Although concrete is durable, the stamped patterns on it may wear over time.
