August is almost over, meaning that the Maryland summer will be coming to a close within the month, and fall is just around the corner. As the weather starts to cool down, it’s time for gardeners to switch out their summer annuals for fall annuals! Take a look at our tips for preparing your garden for the new season by planting fall annuals.
Mums
Mums, or Chrysanthemums, are that most popular fall annual that should be a part of your autumn garden. Start early by buying potted varieties at the beginning of September to ensure you have options in every shape and color available to pick from. The plant comes in a very wide variety, including every color on the spectrum except for blue. Look for autumnal colors such as yellow, orange, maroon, and red for your fall garden.
You can plant potted Mums in fall beds or containers, remembering to keep them well watered. If you want to grow Mums from the seed, you will need to wait until the early spring to give them the time they need to bloom for next fall.
Pansies
Pansy is another popular fall flower that is perfect for plant beds, borders, containers, and groupings of other flowers. These fall annuals grow in full sun and last from early autumn until early spring. You will also have a wide selection of colors to choose from with Pansies, including yellows, purples, blues, and oranges.
Celosia
Celosia also provides stunning autumn colors of bright yellows and oranges, to deep reds and burgundy for a beautiful addition to any garden. The flower is also durable and low maintenance, meaning it is very easy to care for busy gardeners. Celosia has an interesting look, and adds a fun vertical texture to your garden or landscape.
